A Picture Paints a Thousand Words

There’s a reason the saying has stood the test of time — sometimes, a picture really does say more than pages of explanation.

In financial planning, this couldn’t be more true.

At Foresight our strapline is ‘Your finances.  Simplified’

Because we can talk about markets, returns, inflation, and risk all day long — but for many people, those words don’t always land. They can feel abstract, technical, and difficult to relate to real life.

But show the same concept on a simple graph, and suddenly it clicks.

Take the difference between compounded interest growth rather than simple interest as an example.

Explaining compound returns verbally can be tricky. It involves percentages, timeframes, and patience. But a graph showing a slow start that gradually curves upward into significant growth tells the story instantly.

Or explaining the benefits of investing in an equity-based portfolio over time:

We could explain that markets fall, recover, and move forward over time — but a chart showing sharp dips followed by recoveries makes the point far more powerfully. It helps clients understand that downturns aren’t failures; they’re part of the journey.

Another great example is retirement planning.  Clients want to have certainly about their planning, but 100 pages of numbers and tables can’t tell you what one simple graph can show you – that you have enough money to retire:

Similarly, we can tell you about your balanced and diversified investment portfolio, but a good pie chart explains it much more quickly:

A lifetime cashflow graph can show, in seconds, how long your money is likely to last using different withdrawal levels, and what adjustments might be needed.

This is why we place such importance on visual planning.

Our role isn’t just to provide advice — it’s to make that advice understandable. When you can see your financial future mapped out clearly, decisions become easier, confidence increases, and uncertainty reduces.

Because ultimately, financial planning isn’t about charts or spreadsheets.

It’s about helping you understand your life in a way that feels clear, simple, and in control.

And sometimes, the clearest way to do that… is to show you with a picture.
