Why Having a Valid Will Matters

The recent news of Liam Payne’s untimely death and the complications surrounding his £24 million estate serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of having a valid Will in place—regardless of age or perceived invincibility.

The former One Direction singer tragically died at just 31 years old, leaving behind significant assets including money, property, and personal possessions. However, despite his wealth and family ties, he had not written a Will. As a result, his estate is now subject to the strict rules of intestacy.

What Happens When There’s No Will?

When someone dies without a Will, the distribution of their estate is determined by UK intestacy laws. In Liam Payne’s case, as he was not married at the time of his death, his young son Bear—shared with ex-partner Cheryl—is the primary beneficiary. But while Bear is entitled to inherit, he is still a minor, which complicates matters further.

Cheryl, along with Payne’s music industry lawyer Richard Bray, has been appointed as an administrator of the estate. However, due to the absence of a Will, they currently have only limited authority. They are allowed to preserve the estate, but not distribute it, leaving financial matters in limbo until a general grant of representation is issued.

Why It Matters

The absence of a Will doesn’t just delay the process—it can create confusion, legal complexity, and emotional stress for those left behind. Even in seemingly straightforward cases, the process can be drawn out and result in unintended consequences. If Liam had made his wishes clear in a Will, Cheryl and the legal team would have had full authority to manage and distribute his estate according to his preferences, rather than relying on statutory rules.

Moreover, Wills don’t just determine “who gets what.” They can outline guardianship for children, set up trusts, and provide instructions for how assets are to be used—vital protections when children are involved.

A Reminder for Us All

Liam Payne’s story is a heartbreaking example of how sudden life can be—and how essential it is to be prepared. Whether you’re managing millions or simply want to make sure your family is looked after, creating a Will is one of the most responsible and caring steps you can take.
